Vacant Position: Programme Manager – Marine

Reporting to: Head of Programmes

Location: Mombasa

The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) is a membership based NGO that seeks to enhance the conservation and wise use of the environment and natural resources in East Africa for the benefit of current and future generations.

EAWL works in four key thematic areas; Forests, Wildlife, Wetlands and Marine.

We are seeking one (1) Programme Manager- Marine, to support the delivery of our marine programme for a period of one year with a possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Programme Manager will work under the direct guidance and supervision of the Head of Programmes in the following areas:

a) Managing the Marine projects in the organisation including implementation of the Marine conservation programme

b) Building and strengthening local community institutions including Beach Management Units (BMUs) and Indigenous Communities Conserved Areas (ICCAS) in
conservation and sustainable utilisation of marine resources

c) Monitoring the Marine conservation issues in the East African region and reporting areas of interventions for the organisation

d) Enhancing the visibility of EAWLS as an organisation that seeks to collaborate and partner with relevant stakeholders in the promotion of management practices
for the sustainability of coastal and marine resources

e) Providing inputs in the review of applicable National policies, regulations and programmes

f) Generating fundraising proposals for funding the Marine programme

g) Development of work plans and budgets for the Marine programme

h) Representing EAWLS in official occasions and functions, including workshops & conferences

i) To promote EAWLS and its work and to deal with enquiries from the general public, members and other interested parties on matters relating to Marine
conservation.

j) Undertaking other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or other related courses such as Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology or any other related field.

A master degree in any of the fields mentioned will be an added advantage.

In order to be considered for the position, the applicant should meet the following criteria:

  • At least 3 years’ experience in managing conservation projects
  • Knowledgeable in contemporary issues in Marine sector
  • Excellent skills in stakeholder engagement including local communities and partnership building
  • Ability to develop good donor report in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated experience in development of funding proposals related to natural resources management
  • Motivated and inspired to take concrete actions for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources,
  • Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results,
  • Good oral and written communications skills and demonstrated research abilities and interest
  • Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Ability to multi-task duties and apply practical problems solving skills as needed,
  • Shows persistence when faced with challenges and remains calm in handling complex situations.

The successful candidate will be remunerated in accordance with The East African Wild Life Society’s policies and scale on remuneration.

Place and Hours of Work: EAWLS Coastal Office, in Mombasa. Working hours will be from 8.15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with lunch break
between 12:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
