Job Vacancy: Laboratory Manager

The Kenya Paediatric Studies research group seeks a motivated individual to oversee laboratory operations for a portfolio of ongoing scientific projects.

Objective of this Position: The laboratory manager will be responsible for the management of laboratory operations and coordination of laboratory activities to support several research studies.

Position Details

Work Schedule: Full Time (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday

Location: University of Nairobi Paediatrics Research Laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya

Contract Duration: One year (renewable)

Reports to: Laboratory Director

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Assist the Laboratory Director in the overall direction of the Paediatrics Laboratory
  • Supervise all laboratory functions and staff, including but not limited to development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment repair and maintenance, staff hire and training, and laboratory tests
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all laboratory-related issues, results interpretation and dissemination, supplies ordering, international shipments, and other logistics
  • Prepare laboratory staffing schedules and ensure laboratory staff adhere to project SOPs and timelines
  • Attend regular meetings with research staff at the study clinics to address lab-related matters and promote positive lab-clinic relationships
  • Assist the Laboratory Director in the design and implementation of quality management procedures
  • Ensure the laboratory produces quality results by supervising and directly participating in sample testing procedures and by managing the quality assurance program including both internal quality control and external quality assurance
  • Oversee sample handling, processing, and inventorying to ensure ongoing integrity of samples for both ongoing and repository research projects
  • Conduct protocol for specific laboratory tests and procedures
  • Develop and facilitate a good management structure within the laboratory
  • Direct international shipments of laboratory samples to the United States and Canada through liaison with a courier company and local and international research collaborators
  • Assist research study staff with the preparation and submission of documents to ethics and research committees as required for implementation of lab-related research procedures and initiation of international shipments
  • Coordinate all regulatory and compliance activities and training requirements for the laboratory
  • Ensure all laboratory staff are compliant with principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and protect the privacy and confidentiality of study participant data
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory documents and records, including but not limited to SOPs and test results
  • Oversee annual review of laboratory SOPs and initiate updates as needed
  • Write and implement an analytical laboratory plan for newly implemented research studies
  • Coordinate collaborations with other laboratories

Requirements

  • Possess a Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience in a busy clinical or research laboratory
  • At least 3 years of experience in a management position

Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience in carrying out laboratory testing for research
  • Experience in usage of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Experience with independent execution of research projects and laboratory testing
  • Trained on Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)
  • Experience in laboratory audit processes
  • Aptitude for technical problem solving
  • Ability to effectively supervise laboratory staff, interns, and students on attachment in the laboratory
  • Good communication and management skills
  • Knowledge of basic word processing and basic statistical skills of analysing laboratory data
  • Ability to evaluate laboratory data for quality control purposes
